Splitting RBTA?

Gosh, I hope that's what's going on here ... any particular thing I need to watch out for as far as water parms go? I dunno if any part is going to get left behind to rot in the tank. Also, I fed this thing a pretty good sized hunk of shrimp yesterday ... is it in one of the anemones, or do you think it fell out and is going to be polluting my tank?

Boy, my son is sure exicited ... because now my submissive ocellaris can now have his own anemone, and move out of the mushrooms.

Hopefully the GSP the nem is crawling all over will recover ...

Thanks!

Bill

Nothing will get left behind....I had one split 3 ways once and kinda looked like that.

Anemones will regurgitate whatever they can digest in a day or so, so you should keep an eye out for that. From my experience the more you feed them the more splits you get. It seems sometimes they just bigger though too and never split.

I wouldn't worry about the GSP you can hardly kill them...you might wanna keep them somewhere they can't spread cause they are know to take over sometimes...

Hi Bill, its a perfect example of a split. Congrats.
There won't be any pieces so don't worry about that.
It will take up to 2 weeks for there mouths to form so don't try feeding them until you see that they have there mouths.
More information on my web page.

Thanks for the replies!

This morning, there are two RBTAs semi-hidden in the rock (unfortunately I can't get a good shot with the camera). They are only partially deflated, but I presume that after ripping yourself in half, it takes a bit out of you.

LOL Bill, yes it will take a bit out of them.
Don't understand why myself ;)
Congrats.
They will stay wilted for qhite some time. Usually hang upside down to while healing up.
I do suggest a water change. A 10% will be fine.
It seems to get them going better.
Post pis when you see them.

Here are some photos of the split RBTA ...

They don't seem too shy, out moving about and as inflated as I suppose they can be at this point.

I have to admit, this is the coolest thing so far for me in this hobby!

A trick I learned into getting splits is dont feed the anemone for a whole week, then on a saturday give them like 3-4 shrimps it will triggers a split, works for me every time. If you feed them daily they will grown in size rather than spliting-Sam;)

How do you get it to take more than one? After I feed mine a whole silverside it will draw away from food that touches it unless I wait a couple days...

My F1sh R D34D! -

I have been fighting a continuing battle with dinos, so I had backed off on the every-other-day feeding. It had been about a week, and it wasn't looking as full as had been, so I felt bad and gave it maybe 2/3 of a chunk of jumbo shrimp. It took it quickly, and that night, the split occured.

There may be something to it!

Ok,

SOmeone please help me out.

Is it good for anemones to split? I have read somepeople do not like them splitting.

Does feeding them "force" them to split?

If you do not want them to split, should you not feed them?

Some people don't like them splitting (myself including) because we don't want an anenome species tank. Seems like after ours split, it went on a wander rampage and had fun stinging things (including our poor clam).

Feeding them doesn't "force" them to split, but it sure encourages them. They've got an abundance of resources, and the best way to save your species is to reproduce when you've got an abundance of resources. Only makes sense.

I don't feed mine but occasionally when I want to see them eat, but they split anyway (probably because their tank had just gone through a 20 mile move and seen the addition of a lot of cured live rock). If you don't feed them (GBTA are what I'm talking about, since they're my only experience), they won't grow so fast.

I was feeding mine because it had some damaged/missing tentacles and it was helping them heal quite nicely. The already healthy tentacles were getting longer. I'll try feeding regularly, but smaller portions on this next go round.

Well, just an update. It's been two weeks and the mouths are formed well enough to eat. I fed both small chunks of store bought jumbo shrimp. I soaked them in RO before hand. Both took the food.

Now, on the smaller of the two, after the feeding, I noticed what appeared to be sloughing tissue. I've seen this once before the split right after a feeding. It's like on several tentacles, there appears to be a thin, translucent white tissue peeling off. Otherwise, the nem seems fine. I had asked Dr. Ron, but he had no idea.

Finding Nemo, have you ever seen anything like that before?

Hi Bill, I have seen this also, looks like snake skin only thinner and transparrent.
Nothing to worry about and my fish eat it.
How are they doing?
The pics are great of them.
Hope they are doing well, they look great in the pics you posted.

I also wanted to add, I bought a very large rose,(faded) from a local fish store, the poor thing was pink but huge and reaching for the non available light he had on the tank.
I brought him home and fed him heavy to gain his color back, withing 2 weeks he split after getting some of his color back.
So I have also found in the past that heavy feeding will make them split.
Altho I was hoping this one would'nt as he was beautiful just as he was.
Amazing thing is, since they split they are both almost the same size as the original one.
So I now have two gorgeous roses in that tank.

So this trick only works on Saturdays ;)

Yes. If you would like your anemone to grow without splitting feed it small pieces smaller than the mouth every day it will get huge bulky.

If you want a split say to have 3-4 anemones in your tank let them feed off the light in ur tank for a week usually on staurdays since I have more time and feed it nice huge jumbo shrimps and it ususally triggers a split. I have been testing, I have 4 anemones. Two that I like to get them splitting to sell and the other are 8 inches diameter oral disk from feeding everyday small pieces. I got them from Kevein AKA Anemone it was around 5 inches but split so went down to ike 3 inch anemones and have jusy been experimenting since.

Mouths ususaly develop in about 2-3 weeks
