I have what appears to be a white porous sponge growing under one of my rocks. I know there are 5,000 different species at least but was looking for a directory of the typical marine tank sponges...those that are not store bought.

The creature I was asking about is a very common sponge of the genus Sycon (commonly referred to as a Syconoid sponge). They are prolific harmless filter feeders that flourish in tanks sometimes with high nutrients.
People often describe them as "puffs" or "pillowy". They have a dingy off white color."
There aren't any good ones because you can't identify them or even get close by pictures. You have to look at prepared specimens microscopically to get beyond class in almost all cases.
