sponge question

An old piece of coral that a put in my new tank is turning pink & appears to have a small piece of sponge growing on it, it was out of my old tank, can it regrow after being out of water & can other things on it? I never bothered to really wash it just rinsed it with salt water.

I think there is some confusion about sponges dying if they are exposed to air. There are different types of sponges. Some are calcerous and some have silicate structures. It is the later,I believe, that trap air and perish if exposed to air. Sponges that come in on live rock and grow in aquariums are usually the calcerous type.

no this rock was dried for 3 yrs, how fast can coralline grow?
