Sporadic power outages

I really hate ice storms! We were without power off and on yesterday until 7pm. We've been out ever since! :mad2: Luckily I was able to rent a generator and I'm able to keep the temperature and water moving on the tank.

Anyway this was too close of a call so I'm going to buy a generator asap just in case another power outage of this length occurs again!

I know........ I was kicking myself for not having a battery powered pump or something. Our power was out for 5 hours and then flickered for another couple hours, it was nerve-wracking!

It's one of those necessary evils that you got to have if you have a lot invested in your tank. The closest one generator I can find is about 100 miles from here. Hmmm....this blows. The one I'm renting now is $40 a day so it might be worth it just to go get it today.

Slovan, I agree
I have been thinking the same , we did not have an outage but
could of.
I wounder if it would be woth it to hold off and buy a self starting gen set ?
every time the power flickered it shut off the halid's.
twice it triped the breaker, I would guess from the large start up surge.
There should be a way to automate start up , so every thing comes on in sequence as not to blow a breaker.

Have to think on that one, i guess delayed relays would do it ?

if I would not of been here the tank would of gone cold.

I just went through an 18hr outage, have no idea yet as to the damage it may have caused. I did go to Des Moines today and picked up the last 5000W generator they had, but it may have been to late. The power just came back on.

I have a large power invertor and extension cords to hook up to my car. I have to be in town to hook it up though :)

That can at least let me put basic circulation and some heaters on.. I can always put candles and such under the tank to warm it up too.....

We never lost power although it did flicker twice yesterday. I got a frantic text message from my buddy that started out with 'Is your tank ready for fish? I haven't had power for 15 hours and my temp is at 58 degrees.'

He was heating up water on the stove and floating it in bags to bring the temp up before the power came back on. Had the temp up to 72 degrees or so when the power came back on. Although I don't have any livestock in my 75 yet, makes me glad that we keep a generator out in the car trailer for car shows and handy to use in a situation like this had I had livestock.

It definitely would've been a tough lesson learned had I lost any of my livestock. At any rate, I'm prepared for the next power outage now. :)

We were out in Marion for 19 hours. I have two power inverters. Hook them up to car batteries and they run pumps and heaters to get u thru. Any auto store has them for $70 each. beats a $500 generator unless we are talking days. I keep 3 car batteries in the garage for just an emergency. Buy the largest inverter. the small ones are worthless

$500 is a kick in thre rear, but is sure is nice now having my refrigerator and freezer running considering there is around $1,000 worth of beef in the freezers, not to mention the value of the rest of the crap in the fridge. Plus my furnace is running for about $20 worth of cord, receptaple, and conduit fittings.

I just can't wait till the standby generator is installed so I can run the house like nothing is wrong.

I definitely agree, I had both return pumps and all the heaters on the tank running, our fridge and deep freeze and in about 5 minutes spliced into the power line to the furnace and got it running. I really don't know why I didn't buy one before now, but I'm glad we have it.

I am trying to setup a system with an UPS and am hoping I can simply run my pumps for oxygen. My house stays naturally at a neutral 60 degrees and 300 gallons takes a while to go down. Luckily Coralville usually gets power back quickly.

Nor sure how you wired the furnace Allen, but I added a receptable below my switch and fuse that are right at the furnace. I installed a cord with a plug on it to the furnace, that way if I have to do this again it will only be a matter of unplugging the furnace from the wall and plugging it into the cord from the generator.

Gen set

Gen set

My wife put the kybosh to a standby gen set,
allwise wanted one. natural gas powered.
But I guess she is right may go forever with out needing it.
But a good portable is shure a good idea.
This summer has me worried also. I had the AC trip it's breaker last year only was 2 hrs before i got home but still was 90+.

This is my "Little" ups that I have the tank on....

75984UPS-small.JPG

it is a APC 2200 with an extra battery....

since I installed it I have been goign to do a "stress test" but have yet to see how long things will run.
I figure between it and the AC3 controller shutting down all non esential Items I should have a few hours of runtime for a pump or two.

Luckly the power in Pella just flickered a few times I didnt loose power completly for any duration

but every time I heard all the UPSs in the house BEEP my heart would stop ..

but it is not all good in Pella , My truck has a huge dent where a tree branch decided to land, and my roomates Jeep is worse it has the rest of the tree ..

ahhh well ...
