Spotted mandarin behavior

I have a spotted mandarin that during the day I see swimming amongst the rocks and along the bottom. But once the light goes off I see him on the other side of the tank swimming along the top of the waterline and it appears that he's surfing in the wave of the power head. Is this behavior normal? I always thought these fish stayed in the lower end of the water column.
He picks at rocks and eats frozen as well so I don't think he's looking for food.

Mine hovers over the top of the tallest rocks, but really doesn't go more than an inch above that.

But, she also seems to be host to my clown, so there's no accounting for "normal". :spin1:

Mine that just got squished during the upgrade was full grown and I'd had him over a year and he would commonly swim in the water column with the tangs then drop to the bottom. This was during the day. He was goofy but at night he'd bury himself slightly and go to sleep

I'm sorry you lost him. They are such cool fish. Mine's pretty goofy as well...guess that's just their character:clown:
