sps 1250 gallon system

Nothing particular was going to look for big canon led light for the massive tank. Otherwise just good excuse to get out and enjoy the hobby

Hey guys ill have pics again soon. I added a ton of fish. I mean like 30!! Interuptus , a pair of regals, and more. .. Ill be at macna tomorrow eve!!!!!! See you all

Sharing a story for all those who might make same mistake.

We recently changed salts to esv really cause i coulnt stand the sludge of brown who knows what in my 400 gall wter change vats that ddh2o salt left.

Ok. Sobas we measured esv we were getting crazy readings on ca mg etc. as if my salinity was way high. After several water changes my main display had these readings also. Ca plus 550 mg 1600

So i rechecked our calibration of refractometers. And low and behold as we warmed them up. From 70 dg fh temp of outside room temperatures to 77 , we realized that the calibration was reading too low which meant my tank and the esv was being prepped at 37 ppt not at 35. This must have been going on quite a while. I do not test ca and mg that often. Just alk.

For all those that use refractometers either digital or eye ones , take this matter seriously. Make sure you dont take 68 deg pinpoint calib solution on a very cold metal refractometer. I have atc and it didnt work. Needless to mention the fish look better already at new salinity. More active. I probably stressed the corals diluting salinity 10 percent but i suspect things will get better soon. I couldnt understand all the rages of how accurate all the levels of esv salt was when i was getting nutty ones. But it was me that was wrong. !!!

Hey Andrew,...Looking forward to seeing your new fish! :bounce1:

I have a question,... I'm about ready to put all my rock back in my tank. Do you have any pictures of Your, rock lay out in the tank when it was first set up,... before all your coral growth? Also what did you do as far as attaching the corals where you have them located? I have read some guys posts that corals can/will topple over as they grow if they, or the rock work is not secured properly?

Andrew, could use your knowledge/input on this!...Thanks---Rick

Rick i may have a pic with just rock. But then i transferred lot of coral on rock from old tank. But it might help still. I do not use much glue or epoxy. Cause i dont buy pieces on plugs. Mostly wild acro large ones so i dont have that issue. Im at airport now on way to macna. I have that pic on my phone if i can just email it to you

Hey Andrew,... I just seen your posts in the "UV Sterilizer and Carbon Dosing" thread. I seen that was back in June,...you were going to turn off your UV for awhile, and see if your carbon dosing helped your NO3. I'm planning on plumbing in 120W's of UV to my system. Have you came to any conclusions so far? Thanks---Rick

Rick. This did not help. But adding ozone set me back. Not sure if i killed bacteria from water column or just increased nitrate from nitfrication and o, but my nitrate popped back to where i was months ago. Im now at close to 100 ml vodka equiv and have not seen a reduction. I think between ozone uv gfo its just too much. Going with biopellets. Getting them broken in for me now.

In meantime i have a very big big surprise coming Setting up a separate tank for a few prize rare specimens plumbed into the system. Lets just say i expect them to arrive soon and i need a separate chiller on closed loop for these fish. I will share with all of reef central when they arrive.

Hey Andrew,...interesting, have you resumed your uv? Like I said I plumbed in 120w of uv to my new over all set up. I can turn a couple valves to take it off system if I want. I don't know the exact flow rate going through them but they are at the head of one of the two return pumps, so maybe the flow rate would be the max pump output? I can throttle it back if I want. My concern is killing off good stuff... pods, bacteria, ect? I'm not sure how fast or slow to run the water through the light? Did you say that you use yours to help with clarity?

I'll be interested in what you decide on the biopellets. Dvanacker (TOTM Dec.2012) uses biopellets, and I really like his corals.

And a coming BIG Surprise...thats like telling kids they are going to get something huge for Christmas,...but Christmas is 3 months away. How about a hint please :bounce1: ---Rick

Wow, some of the nicest dense sps I've seen. Great job. Any tips on growth? What are you currently dosing and what type of lighting have you found to be the best for obtaining sps of that size. I would presume they would take up a TON of calcium.

Rick. I like the valve idea. And yes water is clearer with uv. And know what. Ive had fish with some dots and it doesnt spread so imo so worth it. Even if its keeping my nitrates at 10 ppm instead of sub5.

Ok. Hint. Well if i told you i was getting a new tank ready for some deep *** red and white rare angels that tasted a lot like peppermint. Lol. No bs.

Paradise. I dose it all. Calcium reactors , kalk , vodka and vinegar, bionic 2 part ,rowa phos gfo, trace elements, potassium and lots of water changes.

Tons of light. 400 w radium mh mixed with reeflux12k 400w in each reflector. So 800 w in each reflector times 4. And then a few extrav250 w radiums in middle of reflectors along with t5 and vho actinics
