IME 1.025 on a hydrometer is really 1.030-1.032. I have tested 10 of them next to a refractometer ( a friends) and all of them were off by .05-.07 These were all used ones. And I still haven't bought a refractometer ;)

How do you know that the refratometer wasnt a lil off?

it was calibrated the day prior to testing. I have even heard a few people state the same thing as well. I run my at 1.018 on the hydro cause I'm still too stubborn to buy a refractometer

Hey man a refractometer is like a gas gauge, if you really need to use one, I have one I am happy to come test your water. They really are worth their weight in gold. Don't skimp and just buy one already!!! I hate to see people loose frags worth double the amount of a refactometer. But seroiously....let me know and I will test your water. However, its late and I am a little fiesty....your killing me....whatever I can do to help please let me know......phoshate? Alk? Ca? Salinity?....etc lets not loose stuff...

That pretty much what I found with my swing arm too. It was reading at 1.025 and with the refractometer that I calibrated prior to use read at 1.030. Getting my own refractometer from Dr. Fosters and Smith...

FWIW, a fellow club member was gracious enough to test my water, with his refractometer at our last meeting. Lo and behold my Deep Six hydrometer was spot on! Guess I got lucky? Or decent brand dunno, but I can rest easy now :).

My Instant Ocean/Marineland hydrometer is spot on as well. I think as long as you keep them clean they stay pretty accurate.
