SPS and affect on PH

Hey guys.

My tank is almost a year old and recently in the last six weeks I've been adding lots of SPS. They are all either doing amazing, or good. No issues so far.

Before I had all of the coral, my PH was bouncing between 8.1 and 8.35. Big swing. But now that I have corals that are growing, it's bouncing between 7.8 and 8.1.

My alk runs between 6 and 6.5
My Ca runs around 450
My mg runs about 1350
I run a vertex Ca reactor with a CO2 scrubber media on the skimmer. The PH in my reactor runs about 6.8 to 7.
I don't run a fuge with a reverse light schedule.

My question is this: could the addition of SPS to the tank affect PH and be the reason that it's running lower than it was before it was stocked? Nothing has really changed parameter wise as I've always had my alk around 6.5.

How do you, all keep your PH high if you have a similar setup?

Would love some ideas.

Thanks,
Joey

If you bring your alk up, that would help your ph. I'm sure you know but open windows as much as possible. It sounds like the C02 scrubber media needs replaced seeing how you're see a low ph of 7.8. My ph runs a low 8.2 and high 8.5.

I'll let someone else chime in on the addition of sps and effect on ph.

Did you happen to increase the amount of effluent coming from your reactor in order to keep up with the all/Calc needs of your new corals? If so, this may be a cause of the lower pH.

Hi
I run a similar set up with a calc reactor and CO2 scrubber which at best increases the PH by 0.02 even with a fresh air feed .You need to get the KH up to 7.5 to 8 the main thing is keeping things stable if you are getting growth leave the PH alone and stop chasing numbers. With using a calc reactor you will always have a lower PH mine runs btwn 7.8 -8.00 my tank is crammed with sps and I have great growth .If you do increase the KH do it very slowly ???

I'm getting good growth so I'll leave it alone. I run ZEOvit and they don't recommend alk that high. It causes problems with ULNS.

Thanks for the tip though.

Must be the effluent thing.

Cheers,
Joey
