SPS and LPS mixing

I've got a new -- 2 months old 100 gallon reef with a 30 gallon sump/fuge. See my info at the bottom. I've got three Lyretail Anthias, Saddleback Clown, Falco Hawkfish, Firefish, Scooter Blenny, Royal Gramma and a Pacific Redstrip Hogfish.

I am intending to keep SPS. Right now I have some LPS -- Macromusa, Acan Lord, Chalice, Troch, FIji Lether, Orange Fungia, Favia, Christmas tree coral, and a bunch of zoas. Just a smattering of LPS frags. Water quality is excellent. Lots of flow.

My question is what can I mix successfully, if at all? Is there any rule of thumb for keeping them together or is not advisable?

No problem except the sweepers. Just be careful what touches what. What might cause trouble is the Fiji leather, the Christmas tree, and the zoas. Those are softies. Softies send out chemicals to inhibit stony growth.

I have kept zoas and sps together for more than a year, no problems. I don't think zoas play chemical warfare, though they certainly can overgrow sps if strong enough.

What is a good starting coral?

I do have a small frag of Montipora digitalis. It been broken many times, and just keeps coming back. Polyps entended most of the time and growing.

What would you start out with -- hardy and colorful?

I think Montipora digitata are good for starters, they tend to do well even with lower light levels and non-optimal water parameters. So do the pink or green birdsnest (Seriatopora).

IME I wouldn't worry a whole lot about having some softies in the mix if you have enough flow and skimming to minimize the possible chemical warfare...

Thanks, larryl. I've got Plenty of flow. I'll lookinto the Seriatopora. I'm going to try to keep the softies separate from the SPS, although that's a diffiuclt task.
