I have a stylophora that is doing this. It was doing a STN of sorts around some areas of the base of the frag. I finally decided to move it to a slightly different location. Very quickly it started to look better and has now completely overgrown all the areas that were smooth white before.
SPS can bleach and not be dead. Bleaching happens when corals expel their zooanthellae. I have had completely white colonies come back. Do you have any polyp extension on the bleached areas? This is however different than RTN or STN were the "skin" actually peels off.
On mine, the areas that were said to be bleaching had great polyp extension. This is on the paletta blue acro I had in the other thread. On my stylophora, I had completely denuded areas that have now completely grown back over.
stn and rtn have nothing but hollow polyp holes. Bleaching will still have the polyps but turn white. Even lighter in coloration is a form of bleaching. How much color do you see in natural reefs?
