SPS friendly cleanup crew?

Hi guys,

I recently restarted my 65 gallon tank. I am planning on an SPS dominated system. It seems so much has changed from the last time I had started a tank 2005...

What kind of inverts are safe for a good cleanup crew for such a tank? Any to avoid?

Pete

A mix of snails is what I rely on. No crabs and definitely no shrimp for me but if you must, then scarlet hermits are fairly safe. Algae is not all bad.....having some is a good thing, IMO.

Sorry to disappoint, but depending on your skill level and experience in 2005, honestly not much has changed. I got into the hobby right around 2005, stayed till around 2011, then took a 4 year break.

Vodka dosing has become more commonplace, but was first being explored back then, and LEDs have come a long way, but still aren't a replacement for T5/Halide for most people (and it's frequently hotly debated).

Everything else is the same. Low nutrients, maybe with some amino acid dosing, 2 part or calcium reactor, skimmers, and controllers are a bit nicer, but we had some nice controllers back then too.

As to your main question, most clean up crew are SPS safe, but if you want to be safe-safe, just use astrea snails. If the tank is larger, you can do some urchins as well. Tangs of the bristle-tooth variety are helpful in larger tanks. I usually avoid crabs.

Good husbandry and manual labor IME. Most CUC these days are pets...

FWIW, I keep a standard 20 gallon tank with just one golf ball size Trochus snail in it. I'm actually surprised it's been with me for so long, being that the tank is damn near spotless...
