Best to start an SPS low irregardless of the species for the purpose of acclimating the coral to your lighting, as it often differs from the LFS. Keep a close eye on the coral and if it is doing well move it higher. Its always best to research what part of the reef your coral is found. I find that montipora thrive under very intense light, where as my brown/green digitata grows much beter under less intense lighting.

Usually if I buy a frag from someone with similar lights, I'll just go ahead and plant it about the same level they had theirs. I get lazy moving it up every week. haven't had a problem yet. I definitely do keep a close eye on it and if it shows signs of bleaching, I'll move it down.

Placement truly is an art. For example, take a Red Planet. The beauty of this coral IMO is it's two tone coloration. Placed high those two colors are red and white. Placed low in some tanks it is red and green. The trick is keeping the green. Some corals will look completely different depending on how much PAR they receive.
