SPS, High Alkalinity: New Growth or Burned Tips?

Hi all,

I have a very simple question:

How do you determine if white tips on SPS are due to new growth or burned tips? Assume the Alkalinity is 11 dkh.

Are there certain visual characteristics you look for to discern the difference?

id look for polyp extension..if you see none..look at the coral at night and see if it extends its polyps. If no extension...burnt tips

Should I look for extension throughout the coral or just on the tips?

you'll see some discoloration soon if it's the tips.

+1, if its just skeleton left it will get diatoms and algae pretty quick. Although it should be pretty easy to see if the flesh stops or not.
