Got this from the frag swap yesterday, it was a free clipping from the fragging demo. Probably simple for some of you, but being a complete newbie to SPS I have no idea how to identify the subtle differences between these guys... any ideas?

thanks.

Yeah, I agree with the birdsnest if the branches get "kind pointy-like." <-- that's a technical term Or, if the stay smooth and roundish, possibly a pocillipora.

Birdsnest, is my vote, not all BN's are pointy tips, but the other's are correct too, Pocillopora, when closed up can look very similar to some birdsnest corals. Nice to meet up with you yesterday.

Yeah, glad to meet some of you guys too... seems like we've got a really good thing going here. It's one thing to talk in internet-land, but so much more to be able to meet up and check out each others' setups. Also, I'm in a freeloading binge right now to get off the ground, but trust me in time the favors will not go unpaid... much thanks :)

Thanks Bill... focus was a bugger up that close! A macro lens would be welcome if they weren't so damn expensive.

I'm on the fence between the pocillopora and seriatopora. The former looks like it should be developing more clubbed tips, the latter, pointed tips. The only indication of either that I see here is the top tip appears to have the ever most subtle point to it, but nothing conclusive for sure. Good place to start, anyhow

My son scarfed up one too. I put it in his 2 gal nano. Don't feel bad Joel, I was shagging free stuff too from the Kent guy. It will be cool to watch the frags I got yesterday, grow out. Everything I got has opened up.
It was nice meet a few of the members yesterday. Im looking forward to the next meeting.
I had an opportunity to talk to Larry Flint yesterday, from NCPARS. He was telling me their club is actually only a few (three maybe) years old. They started out with 5 guys meeting in someones basement. Sound familiar???..lol. It was neat to see all the stuff they participate in and what they have grown into.

Oh well...back to staring in the tank

There's also some documentation (from Melev) about birnest tips rounding in the presence of higher nitrates. Not sure if that's scientific or just an observation..

Its nice to have the club at the size it is right now, sometimes they get too big and unpersonal or to the size that you can't meet anywhere except firehalls and the like. There's a lot to be said for just a group of hobbyists getting together without some of the 'clutter' of organization - if that makes any sense...

ha, didn't realize you were there. my sincere apologies if your son took an elbow to the head in the chaos that ensued when he said 'free clippings' :D And I definitely dosed that Kent Vitamin C snake oil last night, lol.

agreed bill.

LOL.... I don't think he took an elbow to the noggin. If he did he probably deserved it for something he did I didn't know about. haha.
