SPS Question????

they have been stressed to the point that it finally caves in like a house of cards and dies fast. actually, you can usually see it coming if you are used to looking at your acros very closely.

they look bad on a macro level, then next day: flesh all gone.

also, it takes some corals months to die because they hate their environment. but they are dying the whole time, then you just see the very visual final cash out.

It sort of sucks that the only way to gain certain insight is to go through losing corals in various ways. IMO, many starve.

Agreed. Under stocked tanks are the #1 killer of SPS in my book. The nicest looking SPS tanks I've seen are FULL of fish. Any time you've got corals in a tank that aren't showing signs of growth there is cause for concern and it's time to start looking for the cause.

What do guys feed your acros? I add dt's plankton 2 times a week and I only have three fish in my tank along with two crocea clams. I know the clams are growing cause you see the new shell coming out.

I have a 40 gallon long tank, with 3 fish...mated pair of pink skunks and a diamond goby of which I feed 4 times a week. But I heavily feed my "SPS" a mixture of rotifers, cyclopleeze, baby brine and a concoction of amino acids and bacteria everyday. Since doing this I have had great coloration, brown out colors that were introduced took on great color. In the past I was getting corals that would pale out or would get STN but havent had that for quite sometime, not to say that it cant or wont happen, just having better success with this method.

This might sound dumb but here it goes, what exactly are rotifers and how can I get them? Arts007 how many times do you feed your acros I know you said heavily but about how many times. And the mixture you posted is that all together or certain things at a certain time.

SPS polyps cannot capture larger(>50 microns) particles of food.
You are basically feeding bacteria and introducing organic biomolecules for the polyps to capture.
You should read the thread Italian Blue Coral Method-pappone.
Things like Golden Pearls, Reef Chili have particles <50 microns and will be directly captured by SPS polyps.
You should feed at night once a week with no algae bloom, and work your way up to twice a week if possible--but not necessary.

Most people just rely on fish poop--especially tang poop, to feed their SPS. No other suppliments are required.

I'm planning on going SPS with my 70G -- would 15-20 tangs be sufficient to generate the required amount of poop? :)

Seriously though.. if SPS tanks thrive in overstocked tanks, I would assume that people are using some heavy duty nutrient export, or does a tank packed full of SPS consume most of it? Just curious..

SPS don't thrive in overstocked tanks.

It's more like well filtered/skimmed tanks were SPS are not getting the nutrients they need can often benefit by the addition of more livestock that requires input of food. Still a really too oversimplified way of looking at it though, IMO.

Though I have to say I personally have not seen the correlation of light and/or starved corals and RTN.

I have tried oyster eggs, they are the right size---just too expensive--ididn't notice any change in the month that I dosed them.
My Acros seem do be doing just fine w/ fish food and the Ca reactor.

I feed the mixture all together, depending on the polyp size of the SPS some are able to capture the cyclopleeze as I have watched the polyp catch it then retract and digest it, the rotifers are much smaller than the cyclopleeze.. I feed them about 4-5 times a week
