That would depend on the species, and how it grows. For example you want to give a tabling acro enough horizontal room while a stag would need more vertical space than to it's sides. Also how much space you have for maximum growth. Some corals can grow 14 inches across within a year so you need to consider how big you want to let that coral get before you need to frag it or allow them to battle it out.
ya that's kinda how i have my corals set up now i have a spot for tabling acros and for stags, but not much of an area for the regular acros that kinda grow into like a ball or something like that. thanks for the advice.
Most people give them 3" away. Personally if you have the room i would do 5" or 6" I have alot that are 2" away from each other and wish they wernt. upgrade coming sooner then i thought
