Sps Tank turnover... I need some help here!!!

Just checked my turnover in my tank.... it is only 350 gallons an hour in a 75 gallon tank... my problem is the reef ready overflow can only handle so much... does anybody have any suggestions??? Modify my current overflow??? Any suggestions would be appreciated.... My return pump is an iwaki 70rlt... it is dialed down and located in my basement..... I have 1 1" return line located in the over flow, plumbed from the bottom.

that is fine for a 75, keep the flow around 4x turnover on the return pump and get your flow from and alternate source like closed loop or power heads etc.

I have a tunze wavebox.... and 3 1200 maxistream mods.... the fish are having problems swimming in the current... my concern would be the tank water becoming rich in organics due to not enough turnover????

I have 2x6200's set @ 100% on a multi 7095 , 3 x6100's streams @100% on the same 7095 and I also have a wavebox .My fish play in the flow .

IMO your tank to sump turnover is fine .You wouldn't need to worry about nutrients unless you have detritus setteling allowing to break down and effect water quality or your skimmer is inadaquate.

6ft MTC 3000 skimmer on a iwaki 100 rlt dedicated from the sump....... the skimmer is fine I was just worried about the nutrients in the tank not being circulated out quickly enough.... I run a BB tank and siphon off the detritus weekly at water changes. :)

My pump is fine..... an Iwaki 70 rlt pumps 1500 gallons an hour at 4ft of head....... this overflow is larger than the normal overflow made by all glass it is an Oceanic tank....... a big problem is my tunze wavemaker if I raise the water level to high it rocks the water right over the edges of the tank... I need a way to lower the water level.... maybe cut the slits in my overflow lower so the level drops and it is able to handle more water.

You RR overflow should handle over 600 gal an hour so turn it up or get a bigger pump.4 or 5 x turn over is extremely slow.

for a fish only or fowlr.....but it is a reef tank, so it is just fine(3x-5x)

I agree with Matt.

I will also mention I use a mag 12 on my 180 and I also dial it back for my wavebox. Turnover is around 4 down from 7 and I have notice darker skimate which I have been longing for since I upgraded to the 180 from the 120 same pump just less head pressure this time so turnover was higher. Now crap can move by the skimmers more slowly allowing them to perform their best IMO.

Thanks guys.... I was getting a little worried I see people with 10-20x turn over and I think Uhh I am not even close!! I have good flow in the tank.... polyps move in all directions very forcefully. I have 3 maxistream mods and tunze wavebox in the tank.... I was thinking about drilling a row of holes 1/8-1/4 in diameter just below the teeth of the weir to increase it a little bit more. What do you guys think???

I know it keeps going higher and higher  I am waiting on the 6055's now ;) I have been on a steady rise for over a year now and as long as my corals respond well I keep going . So far so good :D I get some nice thick acros with open growth its kinda cool.

now you lets us in on your secret!!!!!...lol

HIGH FLOW!

Ya man ...as they grow increase the flow!

I've never even added up the turnover rate I have....lots of pumps powerheads and such....but my tangs look like Ben Johnson!...lol....they can just sit in one place and swim their hearts content!

I have a huge flow going on....but my tanks all sps...mostly acros...when softies were in there I had to have way less flow....

I don't use numbers...I just make sure each and every acro colony, no matter location, has the poylps blowing in the currant....if poylps arn't moving...trouble lies ahead....they must blow around nicely! Increased flow equall increased PE!

Hey....is it a drilled tank with overflow?? if so, what size is the bulkhead... you can probably handle alot more than you think you can ...3/4 inch is like 500 gph and 1" is like 7 or 800....get a bigger pump....another benefit of having slow turnover through the sump and overflow is better, more efficient skimming ...pm me if you want details... i think i have some threads and links on this benefit

BB??

BB??

I think you got the BB thing all !!!SDRAWKCAB

I run a BB tank and siphon off the detritus weekly at water changes.

The idea is to have the circulation to lift the detritus off of the floor into the water collumn to be skimmed out, otherwise its a static bed of detritus. Just my two cents.

I run 1 SEIO 1100, 1 SEIo 820, 1 RIO 2100, 1 TUNZE6060 all in a 55, plus my quiet one 4400HH on return.

The flow keeps the detritus in suspension.

good luck!

I know DitchPlains2.... I have 2 very little black onyx clowns which are not easy to come by..... do not want them to get sucked up to the pumps...... I had 4 of them and that is what happened to 2 of them when I had all those big pumps a running!!!! Will reume when the clowns gain some size and strength..... But I think people are a little confused..... When I say turnover I mean water taken and retuned to the show tank from the sump..... I am not counting the in the tank pump water movement..... Hope this clarifies things :)
