Hi All,
I've got an issue where tips on my SPS are dying off. Hard to explain as i've never had this issue on any of my other tanks. You'll see in the pics below but the tips just loose colour (maybe expelling zooanthalle). Its not like the flesh is receding (RTN or STN), just lose colour then dies, then normally grows over the dead parts again.
Pics below but some back ground first.
i've been in the game a while and had a number of successful SPS tanks. this time i thought i'd try something different. Started this tank with 90% dead rock and was running Ecobak biopellets. My current tank is about 200g and running all quality equipment.
Medium ATB Cone skimmer
Lots of flow - 2 x tunze 6105 and 1 x 6205 on 6096 controller
ATI 10 bulb power module (new bulbs)
I set the tank up about 2 years ago with 90% base rock. started off pretty good but seemed to sterile. after amost of year of endless problems with bacteria blooms and random RTN i decided to remove the pellets and go back to GAC and GFO. At the same time (about a year ago) i slowly replaced all of the carabsea base rock with fresh new live rock. after a mini cycle things looked much better.
My Substrate also turned rock hard from the start so about 2 months ago i changes it out with new stuff.
My params are stable (Now)
p04 - 0.00-0.01 Hanna
no3 - 0.00 on salifert
calc 420
alk 8
Mag 1280 (was 1170)
Potassium - 400 (was 350)
temp 26-27 deg
PH 8.1
TDS 000 (was 035)
I started testing my water properly now i'm on holiday about 2 weeks ago. I found mag and potassium was low so i've bumped them up over the past week. Would these cause my issues? I also changed half my bulbs 2 weeks ago. half are new and the others are about months.
I'm doing 20% monthly water changes.
Ive got a fair few LPS which are all doing great and growing like crazy.
Not sure what else i can tell you. sorry for the long post, any help would be great
In the first pic all the tips died back about a month ago. look like they are slowly recovering. Notice the new growth which has taken off on the left. the whole milli also loses colour when the tips die.
You can see all the tips on this are dying too. the flesh on the body and polyps always seem fine. this one will prob dies though and it looks worse than the others. The next photo is what another frag looks like.
This is what the body normally looks like, deep green
