SPS under VHO?

I just got some nice frags from ryansholl on Sunday. So as not to just bother Ryan ;) I have a question for the experienced. By the way, great looking frags Ryan, thanks!

I have put the frags high in my 55 under 220W of VHO. The polyps have started extending on all frags. I take this as a good sign but don't want to get too comfortable. Are the polyps extending an OK, good or great sign?

What should I be watching for to know if they are in trouble ? Browning or bleaching I assume?

Or what should I watch for to know they are doing great?

These answers will help me know how many frags I will take home from tinytool Thursday. :D

It sounds like you could keep about anything with those lights on a 55.

Would need to hear more about what kind of frags to give you specifics to look for, but here are some general things to keep an eye out for; no polyps extended, bleaching/color changes, slime coats, wilted look, and changes in water quality.

Just research a little and they should be fine :)

Thanks Nykademus,

The frags are: (please excuse mispellings)
Purple Digitada
Tri-Color Acro
Birds Nest
Green cap
unknown montipora

Thanks for the good words, keep in mind most of your frags came from Rachael's tank, though!

Like I said, try them out at the top of your tank. They were under vhos before, but also under twice as many vhos. Polyp extension is a good sign, at least a good indication that nothing is horribly wrong with your water's parameters, but extension now doesn't necessarily mean they'll be extended forever. Browning isn't necessarily a bad thing, but bleaching is. Your digitata and the "lump" unknown monti both go straight to brown in my tank, assumingly because of light difference but also due to getting more polyp extension in my tank than hers. The birdsnest is commonly grown under less lighting than in her tank, as that is where it takes on its green/purple coloring.

By the way, here's your list:

Purple Montipora digitata
Tri-color Acropora valida
Seriatopora histrix (I think that's the right species name)
Green Montipora capricornis
Montipora confusa?
