Sps warfare

I was reading a didn't know all about sps warfare
can someone list the things that sps do to combat each other

i have young sps tank so i want to know what to look for when it does start to happen

I've mostly seen it when they start to grow together...certain species will kill other species where they intersect. Its usually not fatal beyond the area of contact in my experience, but I'm sure there are exceptions.

as previous poster said, they just grow on each other ... stronger one killing the other, not a big ISsue as the weak one looses tissue just at contact point.


but if you leave it be, the stronger will take over the whole colony of the weaker coral !

usually they extract their Polyps alot longer than usually when close to another SPS, in my experience. [just the branch almost touching the other ...

So no actual chemicals in the water
just at touching point
ex.. As long as i keep them from touching i will have no warfare problems ?

With the flow sps require, if any chemicals are being injected into water by sps, it will be removed fairy fast, by GFO and/or skimmer.

same goes with soft corals and sps in a mixed tank.

You can also run some GAC to help aid in removing toxic chemicals that the corals may release....as the skimmer is limited in chemical removal. I have a mixed reef with mostly SPS and use GAC 24/7.

You can post/search in chemistry forum and get direct response to specific questions you may have from some of the chemistry gurus (i.e. Boomer/Randy).

what is gac? i have a mp40 and an swc 160 on my 75
with a tlf po4 reactor and phosban in it
will that do the trick if it ever starts happing chemically

I don't believe phosban will remove chemical/toxins in your tank as it is designed for phosphate removal. GAC (carbon) WILL remove chemicals/toxins in your system, as well as polish (clear up) your water. just be carefull and use a high quality granular carbon and start off with a lesser amount so you dont shock your tank/corals by removing too many dissolved organics too quickly.

I don't believe that GAC causes MHLLE, but some may say that it takes certain trace elements out of the tank, or the dust can cause an irritation. I think a poor diet and poor water quality play more of a role in MHLLE. These are just my opinions though.

I did have a cherub angel, suceptible also, develop MHLLE as a seconday infection due to ICH. It came through with a wide variety of healty foods and I feel that I keep my tank is pretty clean.

And to answer your question about sps warfare, you can run carbon occasionally to aid in what you believe is sps warfare but I don't think SPS really release any toxins that you need to run carbon for. But I don't know for sure, they sometimes just get slimey.
