+1 When I first got my tank from someone else, the Alkalinity was at 5ish. I used Seachem Reef Builder Buffer to bring it up. I've had no problems since. However, I also use the Seachem 8.3 PH Buffer and 2 part calcium with buffers. Perhaps the buffers in these additives have helped keep alkalinity stable.
 
I am using a calcium reactor to keep my levels stable, but I used to use baked baking soda (also raises the pH since it is baked).
 
I would add that keeping things stable (no big swings in any levels) is also key. Excellent watermovement (30x turn) is something else you want to make sure you provide.
