squamossa clam placement

I have a 92GBF. I have had my squamossa for about a year now. I had him on the sand bed for this entire time. He seemed ok there but was always moving around horozontal to the front glass and all you would ever see is his shell (guessing he could pick up more stuff in the water column this way. I decided to move him about 1/2 way to the surface on a nice rock wall in the corner of the tank. He seems to open up much more here and looks happier.

Is this normal or should they be kept on the sand bed only???

I think as they grow in size they use the sandbed more for support, as a rock won't even distribute their weight as well. I'm not certain about that for squamosas, though.
