Check with the distributor CoralVue in the sponsor's forum. From what I've read over there, CoralVue has stated that if you have room go for the SRO 1000, it has a slight performance advantage over the sss. On a side note I do not own either skimmer.
I used the 1000SSS on my 90 gallon with 40 gallon sump. Skimmer had issues with bolts that held cover on rusting??? Coralvue said they fix'd this issue since. The impeller would get jammed on the cover. I had to take the pump out of the skimer weekly and push the impeller deeper into the pump to prevent the jamming. Coralvue has stated that they fix'd this issue since. Becouse of my 2 issues they sent me a new pump. Great service. I in the end was not happy with this skimmer for my set up but it is not Coralvue falt. I just picked the wrong skimmer. I dont like baffels in my sumps. I like open berlin style. I did not at the time have a good auto top off yet and this skimmer must be keeped in a constant water level or the adjustsments are constant and the skimmer will not work well. If you pick this one then you must have a way to keep the water level constant. Skimmers that are feed by a separate pump are more forgiving for water levels that are not perfectly maintained. I have stuck with this brand since buying 2 skimmers since. A hybrid skimmer to replace this one on this tank and a SRO 6000EXT for my big tank. In my opinion the SSS should only be picked if you are really short on room
