Stable Salinity

I am having trouble maintaining a stable salinity range of +/- 2.

I do weekly water changes of 10% to 30% depending on whether I am vacuuming the detritus. I mix my own water with "Reef Crystals" and get that at about 21/22 usually.

I recently purchased a 40b and hope to start with some corals once the tank is established, stable, and I have continued to do research on the subject. But I would like to be able to consistently maintain 25/26 salinity and right now I don't have the hang of it yet.

My current setup is 10g nano with live sand (1 1/2"), and live rock. Snails, Hermits, Emerald Crab, Fire shrimp, feather duster, 2 ocellaris, 2 small (1/2") chromis, 2 Banggai Cardinals, 1 orange firefish, 1 yellow tail Damsel. All fish are 1" or less in size (except firefish).

I run a Aquaflow 50 filter (no bio media, sponge and carbon only), the small Coralife protein skimmer, and a Hydor 240 power head. I also have an Aquaflow 20 with Seachem Matrix in the media chamber as an experiment to see if it can reduce nitrates once bacteria is established (since my tank is currently overstocked with fish).

All fish are healthy, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10. Tank is 90 days old.

I welcome all comments but am trying to develop my skill at maintaining a stable salinity for future attempt with corals once 40b is ready (several months in the future).

Are you talking about maintaining salinity throughout the day? If so, then just add and auto top off. That will solve your problem.

That's a lot of fish for a 10 gallon. I guess that's what the 40 breeder will be used for?

with a tank that small very small differences are huge. A small change when you mix up salt water will be significant. Also if you top off just a little to much or to little can be significant.

You must be very consistent with WC salinity and top off amount to maintain a stable salinity in your tank. Just my 2 cents.

FWIW I think you grossly overstocked.

I know I'm overstocked, but will rectify when new tank is setup. In the meantime I am working hard to keep the system healthy and so far all is going ok.

I do learn from my mistakes :debi:

I use as smart ATO on my 40b that doesn't have a sump. It works great and keeps salinity spot on. Unless I forget to fill the rodi bucket or turn the unit on.

What are you measuring that is 21/22? The only measurements I am aware of are PPT and sg. Which should be 35 ppt or 1.026 SG in a reef tank.

Is there something that I am not aware of?

I have a Tunze ATO and it works great on my 120g. I do not have one on my 55g but soon will. these are easy to install and simple to use-I am a newbie but I consider this a must have! Just my two cents. :)

Thanks all, sounds like I have two considerations:
1. 10g more sensitive to small changes
2. ATO may help with stability.

Thanks for all the input, I'll press on to get my 40b up and running.

+1 on auto top off. Depending on where you have your tank set up, for about 10 bucks you can diy an auto top off. It's a gravity fed drip top off but for that type of application it should be more than adequate. I'm not saying a doser or auto top off won't work as well or even better, But as a broke college guy I need to be Ballin on a budget, especially when I'm trying to afford acros. :P you can also dose lime water in the same set up. However I recommend researching that since it has the ability to bomb your nano setup

When competing in fish comps, I used a plastic coke bottle filled with my RO with holes in lid, silicon in two aquarium air lines with weights on ends, one slightly longer then the other, sit both in water and when the water gets down to the other, then it lets in the water, its fool proof for small systems and painfully cheap. I made my bracket to hold the bottle out of cloths hangers.
