i am now making a canopy for my 150 gallon and will be staining it pretty soon. the bottom stand is the all glass flat black my question is i guess all the flat black stains are the same? but do i have to get an oil based or water based stain?any help would be nice thanks Andrew

Good question, I have never used a water based stain before. I do know that wiping a wet rag over wood will tend to raise the grain of most woods? I would hope that if it is meant to be used on wood, that this would not be an issue. I can recomend that you stay away from the compo stains (ie stain and poly in one). These are very thick with a consitancy similar to paint and are difficult to control. Go with a wipe-on stain and a the new wipe-on poly (the bomb, love that stuff). Good luck, and save some scrap pieces of wood to test stain match to bottom.

I had the same problem years ago when I made a new hood to match my All Glass Stand... it must be a right of passage, like a Jedi crafting their own Light Saber....

I used scrap lumber and preped it the same as the hood, and made my best guess... then... my grandfathers best guess on another... went with his best buess...

Could always drop a line to All Glass...
