Stand build thread

im building a stand for my 135 gallon tank. im using 4x4s, 2x4s, and 2x2s as the frame, and plywood as the outside.

I used 2x4's for my 120 and 55g sump an that thing would hold up a Sherman tank, just put a little engineering into it, it's still heavier than a sack of bowling balls but I couldn't imagine having used 4x's I skinned it with choice white pine 1x8s but using plywood would likely produce close to the same results, you're close to me you should stop in and take a look at mine, may help give you some ideas and I can show you some things maybe not to do as well

Gotcha...I'll see if I can find a link showing shear loads and 2x material.

That's a beast of a tank re: 3/4" glass...niiiice!

Just read the four corners post and that may not be too bad I doubled up in corners just angled them instead of making a 4x4, so for example one faced east and one faced south to fortify the corners

This is how I build my stands now for anything bigger than a nano-sized tank.

The perimeter of the tank rests directly on the perimeter of the stand that transfers the load down the base section. You always want to keep the load supported and transferred down properly.

That stand design is crazy strong. You probably don't have to use 4x4. In fact, they tend to warp and bend more than 2x4. If I were you, I would follow that stand design that Jacwil posted. I'll bet hundreds of stands have been built using that design.

I've modified that stand design. It holds two rows of 10 gallon tanks. One row is about 30 inches off the ground, and the other row is about 5 feet off the ground (I think). It is solid as a rock, and it is more top heavy than a normal stand. You could think about running a couple 2x4 under the length of the stand from one end to the other. You could put 1/2" plywood on top of that and set your sump on that. Screw in the 2x4 from the sides and the weight of your sump will actually add some rigidity to your stand.

only thing with that design is theres no room around the bottem edge of the tank. the frame is now almost done pics are coming.

the green will be the edge of the tank

As with others, I followed the DIY thread and the tank is hella strong and severely easy to build. On the 4X4's it won't hurt one bit and peace of mind is golden.

so will the tank be sitting on the vertical 2x4 or the 2x4 running the length of the stand on their edge?

Edit: Didn't see your green marks. That should work fine.

Are you going to be closing in the back completely? or leaving it open and putting doors on the front. IME my stand is open in the back and it has been a dream for having a little extra wiggle room and air exchange etc.. it does however allow a bit more noise out. food for thought
