i picked up a 280G over the weekend.....6'x3'x24" (erobraced glass cages tank)
now i need to make a stand......looking to have the tank 32-36" off floor.....which means when the trim hides the bottom tank casing stand will be like 34"-39" tall.....and of course 37" deep.....which means it will not fit thu any doors i have....so stand will have to be in pieces and put together in living room (with still being able to reuse tank if i ever move.
has anyone else run into and solved this problem ??

I have a semi-crazy wood stand design for something that large at home. The basis is to use beams with cut outs which in turn support joists which sit in the cut outs. The whole thing can be dry fit in a workshop then broken down and put in place, then screwed together. I will send you details when I get home.

Ok, basis of the design is a 2X8 beam front and back. A 2X8 also makes up the ends to keep the top the same height. Inside of this is a 2X4 and 1/2" plywood sheet this will form a L shaped beam (plywood between the two 2Xs)

On top of the 2X4 we will run 2X4 joists running front to back on 12" centers. To get the surfaces to match up, you need to put a 1/4" or 1/2" fillers strip under these.

For posts, I would go 4X4s in the corners. You can put a 4X4 post in the center of each long side. I would recommend these but according to my numbers, they shouldn't be required. Making them removable, especially the front one, should give you access as well as piece of mind.

For the bottom frame, 2X4s sandwiching a 1/2" piece of plywood should fit the bill but 2X6's will better spread the weight out.

Lots of screws and a good wood glue between the 2X8 and the 2X4 lip. Also, the 2X4 should rest on the uprights at each end to help transfer the load down the legs.

If you have questions, let me know.

ok......i dont know what happened.......but i re-measured door.....i can fit 34 1/2" thru doorway with door removed.....so i will make stand in one piece (mostly) and will be viewable from 3 sides...tank will end up aprox 36" off floor
