would this hold a 40B? It says it holds 2000lbs for the whole shelving unit so I assume u divide that by how many shelves and it'll hold 500lbs per shelf? this is just for a QT tank, I don't need anything fancy and I haven't cut wood before.

I'm not finding a link for what you're talking about, but if you check around you can usually find a lumber yard that will cut wood for you for a little premium. I have made a simple 2x4 stand in one day that will hold a ton. I used deck screws and a little wood glue and it's like a rock. Cost was far less than any of the heavy duty shelving units.

I think it'll fit. I'll have to take measurements to be sure but I just hope it can hold it. plus it'll give extra shelving for my fish stuff :p

those are outside dimensions and the tank itself, or at least mine, is a bit bigger than 36x18

I use those at work and they are very strong. You can split the unit in half so the tank can sit on top of the system instead of trying to fit it inside the verticals. The main concern I would have is the weak fiberboard that make up the shelves. I would not use that under a tank as it will likely crumble over time and the tank will settle. I would get a 3/4" piece of MDF board from Home Depot to replace any boards you want to use. It might also be a good idea to add a coat of paint on it to make it look better and help seal it more against SW.

My 40B is 1/4" longer than the inside length and width dimensions.

do you mean turn the shelf on its side? I was definitely going to paint the board for water damage. :p
this one is 48"w and 24in deep which may work better. http://www.homedepot.com/Storage-Organization-Garage-Storage-Freestanding-Shelving-Units/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xjvZb9pd/R-100095394/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
