Stand Wood veneer...

Which veneer did you use on your stand? I need something that looks nice as well as that it will take well to stain. Here are some of my favorite wood types (or should I say stain/designs). Can you lead me to some insight on what kind of wood would be easier to work with as well as good looking? Also im not quite sure how thick I should go. Most people but 1/4 inch on there and it looks good but on the other hand I don't want it to dent or break in case something might bump or fall on top.

Base if built with 2X4's then covered with 13/16" maple. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck.

I went with the oak veneer for my stand, it looks nice but the layer of veneer was soooo thin that it peals a bit on the edges. And the side view it looks like plywood, lots of layers.
