Standpipe question

Is there any reason besides being able to see the pipe that you should not install a Durso type standpipe in a tank without building an overflow wall in front of it?

You will get NO SURFACE SKIMMING at all without an overflow. You water level in your tank is also going to be dictated by the tuning of the standpipe.
