Star polyp Question???

When I first started my tank 1.5 yrs ago, the green star polyp was opening 100%, it was huge. Since then i've had a huge hair algae problem, I fear the algae may have suffocated the polyp. Now only a few polyps are opening. Is there anyway I can nurse it back to health??

you can clean the gsp mat with a brush, like a toothbrush

If the Hair Algae is growing on it, then the best thing to do is to get it out of it. On the other hand, if there is no HA on it, then it's something bothering it. Could be the water or some critters that's walking on it. GSP in my own experience can grow on toilet water(that's an exageration). But you know what I mean.

Holmez221b, I have had green star polyps in my tank for over three years, the worst thing for them is hair algae, it doesnt take much to clog them up. Definitly use a toothbrush to clean them, clean them in the morning before the light go on, dont be afraid to use the brush, if the gsp purple mat starts falling apart, then its to late for that section, but all is not lost, gsp are very hardy, and will bounce back.
they love med-high flow- keeps them clean...

By using a brush... won't that harm the coral? From what I've read... they like good air flow.

Also... I think you can use Coral Vital... I think that might help. When my star polyp stays closed... I add it to my tank and within days its back out and swaying in the tank.

brushing them off with a tooth brush (when they are closed)
will not harm them at all, I've done this many times, never a problem. Keeping them clean from algae is very importaint

I agree... keeping them clean is very important. I find having the proper air flow does a very good job at doing just that.

By accident... one can cause harm to a coral if brushed too hard... a piece can break off...

Lots of luck and be gentle then IF brushing the coral.
