Starboard anyone?

kpk

Been Reefin'
I talked to Regal plastics about 2 weeks ago and they where going to sell me a 72x24" piece of 3/8"-1/2" (not sure yet) starboard (hdpe) for $60. Today I went to get it and they said they can't sell it like that??? Something about new computer systems or some crap. Anyway would anyone be interested in buying and splitting a sheet?

Thanks,
Kyle

Just to toss this out there, kpk.... You're removing a critical part of the ecosystem when you run without sand on the bottom of your tank.

You could drop all your rocks in the tank without water and not damage the bottom glass. I've taken a hammer to the bottom of a Perfecto 40 and was very surprised by what it took to break it. Overly cautious is always good though.

I see you're doing an LPS barebottom. That seems counter productive. I understand the theory (though don't necessarily agree) when maintaining SPS. Most LPS prefer "dirtier" water.

Paul I have had my tank for 1.5 years and it has ran great mind you I will, and do have a dsb in my fuge. I agree that going w/o any sand would be a little too sterile and not enough bacteria in the tank.

Mcs I am mainly going to have sps now. My signature hasn't been updated in awhile. I really love my BB.

So you think the starboard isn't necessary?

Even if the rocks fall on the glass? This is a high tank and rockwork will be fairly hight???

There are too many people doing BB for it to be dismissed. Anyone running a shallow sand bed, like myself, is getting hardly any denitrification benefits anyway. BB is a highly efficient way for running SPS only tanks. You can crank up the flow almost without worry, thus keeping detritus in suspended for filtration. If you don't have enough flow to keep it off the bottom, siphoning is a breeze. These tanks are designed to maximize SPS growth and with all of the success that has been had, many are aesthetically pleasing as well.

I would go with the Starboard and if you wanted to get really creative, you could place mounts strategically in the board to suspend the rock off the bottom. I think the piece of mind is worth it, plus it lifts everything a little bit closer to lip of the bottom molding.

That's my $.02

I was speaking less of the denitrification benefits and more about the benefits of a more complete ecosystem. There is a lot of infauna that will reside in a sandbed that improves any system, from softy to lps to sps, etc.

One of the myths of BB tanks is that it is impossible to have higher flow in sand bed systems. It's all about diffused flow. I have a good 30x turnover in my tank in Dallas with plenty of sand. And there is no sandstorms, etc, involved. And in a day or two (or tonight, if I can get everything plumbed together right) I will be turning on my sump return pump, pumping it up to 40x turnover or so.

I don't mean to get into a flame war over that. I just feel that most of the benefits of bare bottom are often based in misconception, etc.

I have to agree here. I have about 45x turnover in my 29g with a 3" DSB. I was going to take out the powerheads and put in a MJ1200 Stream Mod (2000-2500 gph), but I just couldn't get the angle I wanted with it being mounted to a Mag Float. In fact, I just got a bright idea about putting something between the float and the glass to angle it just the way I was hoping for. OOooohhh... This gets me all excited!

There are as many people disatisfied with BB.

Im not a fan, I think besides removing denitrifivations (and you only really need 2-3 inch of sand for that, you are removing the basis of the micro plankton that inhabits the sand bed.

However, my main dislike just stems from the highly artificial look. I much prefer the aesthetics of sand.

Its your tank tho.

Paul.

Goodness how did we get here from KPK wanting to split the $$ of starboard? Kyle, good luck in your ventures. You know if you post on a public forum you will get the good with the unnecessary!

LOL, Dusty you are correct. This one alwyas gets way off topic. Lets try and keep it back to the point in hand....if someone wants to split a board.

P.

I was going to jump in and make sure you knew, Kyle, that we all do respect your decision to go BB and wish you the best of luck..........even if we are all opinionated *&^%$#@! :D
