Starfire glass chipped

Just picked up a used 4'x2'x2' rimless starfire tank...

During transportation, the edge chipped on front panel. My first concern is the integrity of the tank, second is the aesthetics.

Is it still safe to use tank and is there any way to fix the chip?

Thanks!

It is 3/4in glass....
I'm really thinking its not worth the risk. If it did break, it will end up costing a whole lot more then a new piece of glass or even a new tank.
Thanks for the advice!

I did the sane thing to my 90 the day i bought it bringing it through the door. That was 05 still holding strong to this day.

Am I viewing that correctly? That chip is only about 1/3rd of the way thru the glass and it's a nice soft edged chip. Take a dremel tool and grind the rough edges smooth and you'll reduce the potential that it cracks out from there. And it's a 120g tank, right? Based on the 75g I had with a chip that was twice as deep as that, I'd set yours up in my living room and wouldn't think twice about it. I lived with my 75g chipped tank for 5 years and the new owner has had it for 3 more now without an issue.

My 25-30 YO 110 has several similar chips. Not saying that it's perfectly safe to fill up, but several of us have similar situations and tanks are holding up. I'd agree with Ron about smoothing the rough spots. I've owned my 110 since '97 and it had the chips when I got it. But it's on unfinished floor and worst case for me if it breaks is I have to replace the worn out rug in front of it...

Doesn't look like it would be a problem but just in case set it up outside full of water for a few days and see if anything happens.

You can also try an auto glass repair kit to stabilize the chipped area. It's difficult to discern from the pic, but it doesn't appear to have compromised the joint or the panel. However maybe it's better to be safe than sorry.

^^
I was just going to suggest that.

You ever see the chips people create drilling for an overflow? I bet your carpet it'll be fine.

No way

No way

Sorry you paid too much for this return return return i wouldn't use it. Its heart breaking to see stuff like that. I'm buying two of those next month hope they'll be ok when they arrive.

Looks okay to me (second pic shows how shallow the majority of the crack is...) but if you're going to lose sleep over it then replace it.

Rule of thumb. If you have to ask if it is ok. than replace it for the frame of mind. Not worth the headache it will give you wondering all the time or every time you bump it if it will be ok. I would dermal sand it out to keep it from spidering out. Not think twice about it. But if it was something I wondered if it was ok I would replace it. I have enough stress in my life not to add to it as it is.
