I have a medium size brittle like starfish, like a micro star but larger, with long skinny legs who just crawled out of the rocks, with all lights on, and fell to th bottom of my tank. When it landed upside down, it release a huge amount of small ball like larvae. Is this eggs? It filled my 135 gallon tank with what looks like a thousand small particles. If anyone has information please respond.

interesting, don't know of any star that releases eggs and sperm into the water colum. I your star still alive?

I've witnessed plenty of sea stars spawning, but it's always been more of a stream of milky-white liquid (sometimes also described as looking like white smoke) being discharged from the upper side of the central disc. I have not seen anything like you describe.

UPDATE!!!

The glass on my tank is now covered with at least 200 tiny starfish you can see there little legs. so cool.

Sea stars (= asteroids) have an anus on the top of their bodies through which they also discharge eggs & sperm. Serpent or brittle stars (both names for ophiuroids) don't have an anus so the reproductive products are discharged through the mouth on the underside. They either raise up on their legs or turn upside down to spawn. There's a great picture of one releasing eggs at

oops, my memory's going. Release is not through the anus in ophiuroids. There are internal pouches at the base of the arms on the underside that are used for respiration & reproduction.
