I saw a ton of these attatched to the pier at Oceanside, CA beach and I want to know more about them such as what they eat and a name as well so I can do my own research.
Awesome, thanks for the info. Has anyone kept them in captivity before? I would be interested in doing so if they were easy to maintain. Im sure you would need a chiller to keep the water cold though.
Yes, you'd need a chiller, and a constant supply of food to keep them from eating other things in the tank. They feed by everting their stomachs out of the body & over or into the prey item. Then they secrete digestive juices, dissolve the prey, & absorb it. When they're done they bring the stomach back into their bodies. I've seen them in a lot of cold water display tanks so I guess they're easy to keep.
Thanks again for the info. I wonder if I could train them to eat frozen mussels. I think that I would have them in a dedicated tank anyways simply because the water would need to be so cold for them. I dont know what else could be put in the same cold tank with them.
Do you know a local supermarket or edible fish store that has live clams, oysters, mussels, etc? Most of the ones for sale are from temperate areas and should survive in a cold tank. If there are no bivalves for the stars to eat they will probably accept fish or other meaty foods.
