Starfish legs

I have a mated pair of harlequin shrimp, I am running low on asterina so to we'd them I have been chopped a leg of a sandsifter star which I keep in the sump! I was just curious as to how long it will take to grow back its looking good will the skin develop over the stump? And when can I cut another leg to feed the harlequins?

You would need several starfish to preform this and sandsifters will starve due to their dietary needs let alone handle being rotated.

They seem ok at mo there is a lot of detritus in the sump so will they feed off this??

I have no experience in sand sifters myself, but from reading other threads it is recommended to not even purchase them as they will starve even in the largest systems.

Not to mention you need multiple sand sifters.

Ok Thankyou is there any way to suppliment their diet! I have heard their pretty hardy I do have asterinas for shrimp!

Why not just get a couple of starfish for the main tank? I've read that harlequins eat the tube feet from the tips towards the body, so the starfish stays alive longer.

Starfish are able to regenerate lost limbs over a short period of time. To save a dollar people will cut a leg off, give that to the shrimp, cut a leg off a different starfish and repeat the process while the first one's leg is growing back. If it can be done on a single sand sifter is what's being asked. IMO very brutual.. I buy live starfish and freeze them for mine.

Lol I was thinking of doing that but decided to go the leg removal route !! They are looking ok at mo even some slight regrowth! I am feeding them asterinas from other tank at mo until the sandsifters leg has regrown!
