Starfish

Hey guys,

My starfish was acting strange today, standing on the tip of it's arms on the highest point of live dock in my tank. And it released hundreds of little red "eggs" (am I correct to assume). What do I do from here?

Google. 2008_1117additioNew0001.AVI

This is similar to what my starfish was doing

yep.. released its eggs..
But if you don't have a male then its just food floating around the tank..

I believe they can only reproduce on their own by splitting..

I have about 5 of the same species in my tank, The fish did not seem overly interested in them, I think a lot of it would have made it into my sump. Do you think they will hatch ?

If they get inseminated by a male then they probably will..

Do we need to have the "Birds and the Bees" discussion? :P

yes basically i need a "birds and bees" discussion.

is that not the reason we are here? to learn about these things and share our knowledge to one another..

but i guess every thread needs at least one smart ***.

so here are my questions.

1. how does the male starfish inseminate the the female?
( im guessing a dim lit bedroom with roses spread over the bed is not the way he seduces her)

2. how long do the eggs take to hatch ( if fertile )

3. if they do hatch, is there anything in particular i need to do to make sure they thrive and have a chance at life.

basically let me and everyone who is interested enough to read this thread know everything there is needed to know about keeping, breeding, healthy happy starfish.

the species i have in my tank are

2x Astropecten species (sand sifting Starfish)
5x Fromia indica (Red Starfish) one of these laid the eggs
2x linckia laevigata (blue linckia Starfish)

all information will be greatly appriciated

thanks guys :)

Thats a tall order bud. If you want to learn all that you're probably going to need to put in some time researching these critters yourself.
You can start here:

This one is for linckia http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/5/inverts
After you get through those, head to the sources at the bottom of each article and look up and read them.

How long has this tank been running? how long have the stars been in it? How big is it?

Yes is a tall order, i know i have to do my own research, but is good to get opinion from people on here :)

my tank has been setup for about 2 years now, i originally had 3 red starfish, they have been in for about 1 1/2 years and i introduced the rest plus c/u crew after i ran into hair algae bloom the second lot was added 3 months ago

80 gal (300lt)

That's a really good record for stars! A lot of people can't keep them. I revise my earlier ruling on your breeding goals from "nah" to "probably not." Good luck though!
