starfish

I have a 20 gal. tank and was wondering what kinds of starfish would be safe to put in it...I do have some small coral frags so I need something thats reef safe...would some sort of brittle star be alright? I received a chocolate chip star w/o knowing it was not reef safe and will also eat all of my snails...anybody have any suggestions on how to keep my choc. chip star in my tank but not allowing him to eat my corals...or snails?

The chocolate chip star is predatory. Simple as that. You can feed it, which obviously I recommend, but even this will not prevent it from doing what is instinctive.

As for other stars, really only brittle/serpentstars will be suitable. Avoid the green. Consider something smaller like a harlequin serpentstar.

The tank is not suitable for ANY reef safe star (Linckia, Fromia) other than the hitch hiker Asterina. Don't let the small size of Fromia fool you!!!! Definitely not a good choice.

Acclimation and pristine water parameters are important for any type of star, so definitely check into that before adding.

Does anyone know if a small well fed Fromia, or African (Red General) Sea Star will harm GSP, Halmedia, or eat other macros in what is bassically a FOWLR tank with a few softies? (Xenia, shrooms, etc) Also will Fromias harm a Hammer or Frogspawn?

SumpDiver, have your PM and will respond shortly.

The African star is a predatory star and poses a threat to any corals, but not likely algae.

Fromia is reef safe but extremely delicate. This needs a pristine reef system with LOADS of LR. Its diet is likely at least as specific as Linckia (and we are unsure of that diet) and may be more specific. The small size should not fool anyone. Fromia can not be spot fed, as a general rule.
