started treating with copper

My fish have ich pretty bad, so I decided to treat them with copper. I took a 30 gallon brute trash can and filled it with 20 gallons of water from the DT. I also took out a rock from the tank and put it in there (I will toss it when I am done). I put a heater and a power head aerating the the surface. I added Coppersafe till I got to .5 am I doing everything correctly? I just want to make sure I am doing right, I have read alot about it but just thought I would make sure

Sounds good to me. Just keep checking the water to make sure it still test good. You may also want to do a water change ever 3-4 days just to keep the water good. Also, use a copper test kit to make sure your not over using or under using the cooper.

The copper will kill a lot of stuff on the rock so watch your ammonia. I just use PVC pipes or larger PVC fitings. Sounds like your on the right track. Wetwebmedia and RC have some great articles on QTs and treatment of ich.

Yeah really not a good idea but I hope it works for you. Odds are you are going to get an ammonia spike that will kill or severely stress the fish. I can't stress the importance of having a cycled tank so there is no fear of a ammonia. Good Luck. keep us posted.

This is not an ideal situation but it might work if there is enough mature LR.

Whether there will be enough nitrification activity in QT depends on the fraction of LR that you take out.

You should have cycled a medium (preferably other than LR) for QT very well in advance before getting any fish.
