I have never kept SPS before. I was raised around coral, but have never done SPS myself. I will be using a system that is for sale, used at my LFS. 125 with 2 built in overflows, a nice sump box with various chambers, a large skimmer (?brand? but very large.) I will be using 4 48" t5 actinic blue, 2 250 mh 14k, a magdrive 1800 and the largest hydor powerhead (3200?) alternating with a smaller 1500 hydor on their basic wave maker.
The lighting will be suplimented with however many leds are needed to create the effect I want. The equipment is stuff I already have or can get cheap as a package deal at my lfs. I have a 150 w mh that I could somehow add if anyone think the 2 250 mh are not enough? Opinions welcome.
My questions:
1) I have other tanks, so I am not going to rush out and stick a xenia or red mushroom in there. It will be nice to have only things I select in the tank, so that is the question. While I am lettting the tank establish for awhile, what can go well in a sps tank? I plan on a clam or two, and sps,,, what else is good.
2)I will not really need to cycle the tank. I will be able to start with say 25% established tank water and a great deal of fresh live rock (established in near by tank). I will still see if it needs to cycle and be patient. If I start with 100 lbs dry base rock and 50 lbs premium fresh live rock, when would I start my sps? I am not in a hurry, just wondering. After it has clearly cycled and the live rock has been sitting on the base rock for say an additional week, would it be ready or do any of you think I should wait until I see coraline growth, or any other time frame? Thanks.
