Starting a 3 gallon, need help.

Thanks kyle.

Moon: I have decided to get the Hi Fin red banded goby if possible. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=181

cleanup crew
3 dwarf hermits (zebra, scarlet, red leg, or blue leg)
3 cerith snails
1 mini brittle star
1 skunk cleaner shrimps
1 pepermint shrimp
3 sexy shrimp

On the cleanup crew, isn't that too much for my 3 gallon can handle? Can a pistol shrimp be added for the goby by removing 1 of the shrimps? or two?

the cleanup crew should be fine. the highfin banded shrimp gobie is a GREAT choice, getting 1-2 for my 29 gallon actually. I would remove the mini brittle star and 1 of the 2 larger cleaners if you want a pistol shrimp. they would be fine w/ the star, but the star serves a small purpose, and you wont really see it much. so if you removed them the stocking would be
3 dwarf hermits
3 cerith snails
1 larger cleaner shrimp (I would get the skunk, my pep. shrimp is fairly shy and the skunk is also, in my opinion, prettyer.)
3 sexy shrimp (add these after the pistol shrimp, and cleaner shrimp, if the pistol is aggresive to the cleaner then dont get these)
1 pistol shrimp (the high fin banded pairs w/ the randals pistol, a red and white striped specimen, so make sure you get one of those and not a tiger pistol)
1 high fin banded goby
LPS
shrooms
zoas

Thanks moon! I'm getting 4 gallons of distilled water today, and I'm getting the salt tomorrow and if I find any cured, or almost cured live rock I'll get it too. Going to order the light.. and I don't want to know the cost of it all when I'm done :)

Forgot something else:rolleye1:
How do I know I wont be getting ripped off when I buy the rocks? How much should it be per pound?

short answer, you dont. look at the LR, if it smells like its rotting dont get it, look to see the coraline algae coverage(purple stuff that grows on it), it should be thick, and well spread, make sure no dead critters are spotted and best to avoide any that has macro algae, grows like mad and in a small tank w/ no fuge to put it in it gets annoying. if its more then 5$ a pound then not the cheapest, over 6 is expensive. there are many kinds of LR, mine are toga branch and marshals. fiji tends to be very round and hard to aquascape, and tong shelf is very, well, shelfy and flat. branch rock is a branch and marshals tends to have lots of holes, interesting shapes, and holes for coral frags. good quality fiji usually has a good amount of hichhiking coral, macro algae, even crabs, tho not always good.

Moon thanks for all your help
I went to a LFS that I've been to once, this is my second time. The guy there owns the place and he goes on reefcentral.. :p
He is selling me his 3g nano for 290 dollars. He has many corals in there and it looks really nice. It has an 18Watt light on it, and I am getting it. He dropped the price for me by 40 bucks. I'll defenetley go to him whenever I need something for my reef. He told me I shouldn't get a hi fin but I can get a neon goby if I want. He wont sell anything at all as long as he knows its good for the fish. I'm picking it up tomorrow since theres a mantis shrimp in there I don't want. Its only 3 weeks old, and it looks really nice.

There are many more LFS here than I thought.. lol, just got to find them. So now I will have 4 tanks.. oh my room is seaworld now..lol.

3 weeks? thats not very long. really, a high fin is fine, neon goby is fine too, but there is no reason why a shrimp goby couldnt live in the tank. they stay near their burrow, they eat frozen food, dont need pods to survive, they stay small.
the neon goby is however a very nice, small and pretty fish. what kinds of corals dose he have? what other critters?

He has a lot of critters in the store. But he is currently trying to sell everything because the past owners of his LFS kept it like crap. He showed us his receipt printer and there was like.. This orange gooey stuff inside of it. There are fruit bugs all over near his tanks water... so he is going to rechange everything, I don't know when. He has a lot of corals, but I can't name them.. haha.

If you are talking about the reef hes selling me.. I'll get you a list of it tomorrow. I'll tell him what you said about the shrimp goby tomorrow. I also bought frozen mysis shrimp today.

Im for sure that the tank has this- an emerald crab, and snails. He is going to give me this shrimp he has there and a camel shrimp. Im memorizing the thing you told me about the goby :p

The emerald crab I have in here is like.. I don't know I'm guessing he is eating something, I don't know what, but I'm pretty sure its not one of my corals. They are like really small orange dots. That's as best I can it because the emerald crabs body is right in the middle of it. I'm in the middle of a freshwater tank water change, and instead I'm looking at this..? lol.

Lets just say this.. the crab is eating the little orange dots like if it were a spoon and a bowl of soup. There is literary a shell there or something, I don't know what. I'm sure it can't be crab eggs... can it?

Alright edit.. looked at it again with my glasses this time.. and I saw that those little orange dots got a little black dot on each one, and like a tiny tail. Am I seeing things? But it literary looks like he is eating it from a bowl but it is a shell.

um.. re-edit.. The crab opens it. The shell thing I'm talking about. It looks like part of the crab.. So.. I'm nuts right? :strooper:

Ok, the crab moved, and it opened its belly again, and what I think I saw was.. a tiny orange crab? Im defenetley going nuts now!

Ok.. re-edit again now, um I'm getting a clearer view everytime, they are defenetley little orange circles. Can they like.. open their stomach and clean off parasites..?

maybe they are eggs? well, the first 2 corals are zoos, easy to care for, spread like mad. the 3rd Im not sure of, looks like a zoo that needs more light. the next 2 are also zoos. the blue corals afer the xenia are blue mushrooms, and the coral after that is an oran ric. all are easy to care for. all spread like mad.

The third one can't be aiptasia..? I don't think aiptasia has the green outline, I think its a type of zoa. What really worries me is the fourth picture, I don't know if that is aiptasia. The fourth one in the set of pictures has like a green dot in the middle of it. I think I'm going to get a peppermint shrimp sometime next week.

If you guys can tell me what other corals to add in the future, I would appreciate it a lot.

Thank you
-Maxi

slakker means the 3rd coral pic. I was debating whether or not that was aptasia too, looks like it could be. do the tenticles sway in the current? dose any of it? what exact color is it? the aptasia I have seen seem to be purple, brown, and some times tan. as for corals, I would hold off on adding any more for awile, let these grow out, and if in say a month or 2 you still have room add something like another zoo, another shroom, or a soft coral (very small). I would avoid LPS, as they would not have very much room, and they would use their sweeper tenticles to kill others. only place Id put LPS would be if there was a 6" square area in the sand. for now I would add the fish and other livestock. I would keep a very close eye the emerald crab as they can be a pain, as they sometimes kill snails, other crabs, ect...
