Starting a new 90 Progress will be updated

I have owned the Tunze 9010, the Bubble Master 160 (paid $500) and the Reef Octopus Extreme MSX 160. The first skimmer I owned was a joke so I won't include it here.

The reef Octopus Extreme MSX 160 outperforms all of them at only $265.00. That's $50 less than the Tunze and $240 less than the Bubble Master. It is absolutely awesome.

For a Sump I recommend Aquariumpros.com. Go with the largest you can. The one I have now I had custom made but still wish I went a little bigger. Couldn't make myself change again.
That's a big help. That was a decision I've been thinking about of late. I've been perusing the forum here and along the way it seemed that the Tunze is the one to get, but as I've read around further I've began to realize that the octopus is great too, and that is what I had settled on as my future skimmer. I wasn't 100%, but you've definitely sold me on the Octopus now. And now that you've mentioned the price difference, there's just no reason not to go for the Octopus skimmer.
I'll be looking forward to more of your posts here in this thread, so very informational.

Beautiful.

Check out that weed of a birdsnest you've got on your hands there! :eek2:

How large was the piece you originally started with?

Wow Dano, haven't seen an update on your thread in a while... Fabulous progress! That birdsnest is a monster, what an eyecatcher. Do you see any upgrades in your future?

After losing my Potter's in a crash I'm looking for another angel-- I wish I had the resources to have a Wantanabe! I don't know what I'll settle on. Maybe I'll get lucky and an LFS will mis-ID one and I'll get it for $20.

To keep the tank in the same area I am limited to 60". I do want to go with 60" X 24 (156g) or 60" X 30 (180g).

Hurricane Ike damaged the house and 95% of the house was affected. This put a delay in any upgrades but maybe this summer.

Just a note:

The item pointed to was given to me 9 months ago and hasn't grown at all. I guess it's time to remove it.

Any of the Genicanthus are completely reef safe. Another one to look at is Japanese Swallowtail Angelfish (Bellus) Genicanthus melanospilus. That would have been my second choice.

Estimated Birdsnest next year

Maybe the first ever Birdsnest dominated TOTM?

Nice progression pictures... That thing sure took off. I'm picking up an ORA Birds of Paradise (as soon as I can get to Ohio), and I hope takes off like that.

Are you dosing the tank at all?

Go back three pages and you will find the automatic dosing setup. I provide details on the setup and dosing solutions.

Also I feed with Rod's Food Herbivore Blend mixed with Cyclop Eeze every other day in addition to regular fish feedings.

I found 4 of these on my Mag Float. Alive a kicking. I have one Bristle star in the tank that I am aware of for over a year. Why little ones now? There must be many if I found four on the Mag Float.

Well I found this article and I guess you don't need two.

Brittle stars are a diverse group of animals. Just as they have a variety of feeding strategies, morphologies and behaviors, they also employ a variety of reproductive mechanisms. Most brittle stars are broadcast spawners. There are both male and female animals, and eggs and sperm are released through the genital bursae into the water. It is difficult to determine the sex of an individual without dissection, but in a few rare species, sexual dimorphism occurs. The male is usually much smaller, and the two are often found in pairs. Because the genital bursae are on the ventral surface (facing the sediment), the animals are often seen standing on the tips of their arms during spawning. Fertilization occurs in the water column, and typically produces an interesting feeding larvae called the pluteus. Non-feeding larvae may also be produced (vitellaria larva)

Other brittlestars are hermaphrodites and may self fertilize. Many also brood their young. Still others reproduce both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction involves splitting in two (fission) and regenerating the missing half.
