I just purchased an Oceanic 90g with stand and canopy.

I am going to post updates of the progress. So far I have purchased the following.

Very cool. Are you doing a Deep Sand Bed? Hey, does that RO/DI unit come with a reserve tank? I always wondered about that. Or does it flow fast enough to fill a glass of water without one? I am thinking of putting one under my sink and don't fully grasp it all.

I have 90 lbs of sand which I believe puts it at 2".

The RO/DI doesn't come with a reserve tank. I am still deciding what to use. It will depend on where I install the RO/DI. I was thinking about the laundry room and tapping into the washing machine faucet with a brass Y adapter and shut off valve. This way I could also use the drain for the waste water. I need two 15 gallon food grade containers for the reserve. I want to use one for the top off water and the other for mixing for changes. I will be searching locally for the containers as the ones I found online have shipping costs higher than the cost of the container.

If my math is right it only puts out 6.6 oz per minute. The have 150 gpd units.

Since you and I have a very similar setup, I thought I might pick your brain on the RO/DI unit decison you made. What made you choose the OCEAN WAVE+ FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI over the OCEAN REEF + 1 FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI?

I know the Ocean Reef is more expensive, but it comes with a dual TDS meter and a pressure valve. Are these actually helpful to have? I guess they could be added later.

I guess I should get one:
Assuming 10% water change (8 gallons) every 2 weeks (to be conservative) at 50 cents (from LFS), I would only get 20 weeks worth for the 160 it would cost for the unit (plus shipping). Calculate in my cost of water from the city, and I would say break even at 6 months. This doesn't even include the gallon/week of top off I expect.

Seems like a no brainer, but I am still hesitant until I understand exactly what I need.

I chose the Ocean Reef not the Ocean Wave just for the reasons you mentioned. Added the bypass valve for drinking water also.

Oh, I read it wrong I was thinking the bypass valve would be a good addition as well. How much was shipping? Their site doesn't say.

In regards to water cost you also have to add the time to go get it from your LFS.

My megaflow kit came with a double nozzle that split the return back into the tank. I had a little trouble with this design, but luckily PVC is somewhat flexible. My overflow is in the corner, so that may have mad a difference.

That was the very first thing I did to my tank after putting it on the stand. Luckily, it got easier from there.

I have the double flow nozzle also. I have been looking to see if loc-lines will fit to extend the nozzle. It looks as if they only come in blue instead of the black from the megaflow kit. I am painting the back glass black this weekend.

I believe all they are saying is you can bump this up to a 100gpd for the same price.

75gpd ro membranes is 98% rejection rate and 100gpd is 90%.
that mean you need to replace your DI resin quicker for 100gpd.

Day 3

Went to the local Home Depot to pick up a few inexpensive fittings and misc items to finish up the plumbing. Well $135 later I departed for home but first a trip to the liquor store. It is Friday night after all.

Things are going well until I try to put the 3/4" barb on the ball valve. Of course it's metric and doesn't fit. Glad I went to the liquor store.

Ok ran down to Ace hardware just to pick up a 3/4" barb coupling. Ok $60 dollar later (I picked up some small 6" clip on fans after reading others have used them on the same canopy) I'm on my way back but first a trip to the liquor store.

Ok got everything together but suffered my first injury. Made a note not to do that again. Maybe two trips to the liquor store had something to do with it.

Checked out the fans I purchased at Ace. No way these are going to work. They are huge. Made a note to reply back to that post that recommended them. I decided to wait until tomorrow to return the fans because I couldn't afford another trip to the liquor store.

Made a note to shorten drain line.
