I just went and bought a 75 gallon tank I am going to make into a reef/fish tank. I used to have a 55 and the filteration setup I used was a wet/dry sump trickle filter, now the I have been doing some reading I have noticed that with a reef tank you dont need a trickle filter so what I am asking is what do I need to get this thing going, I plan on getting a few bags of live sand and roughly 150 lbs of live rock, do I not need a filter?? I am confused...

Is the new 75g reef ready (drilled)?

ok. So, are you going to use a HOT overflow, or are you going to not use a sump at all, use all HOT equipment? Yes, you are right that you really don't need a "filter", your live rock is your biofilter and a skimmer will help remove a lot of gunk from the water. 150 lbs of rock in that size tank might be a bit much, I guess it depends on the rock and how you set it up. You just want to make sure you can get a lot of circulation in and around and through it.

If your not doing a sump. take a look into the hang on tank refugiums and a good hang on tank skimmer like the Remora, Bak pak, or Octopus.

If you want to get in to a sump you could build one from an old 20 gal long and hide all your equipment in it. Theres a bunch of designes and info on them here.

And welcome to RC.:D

thanks...........................so my filteration is going to my rock? I feel like I have to learn all this over again....what is hot overflow? Oh boy I am confused now lol

It's just a way to get water out of your tank and down to your sump. If you're not planning on going that route, then it's nothing to worry about.

I'd encourage you to go to the top of this forum and check out the stickied thread "New-First time on RC" and read the many links in there for help in getting started setting up. Also check out Waterkeeper's newbie corner article thread for even more assistance. There's a lot to take in, just takes some patience.

alright I will definatly do that, well I dont know what kind of filtration I am going to setup I just want the best this time around thats why I figured I would go ahead and ask a lot of questions.....thanks for your help I will get to reading......
