Starting Over (Literally) - My upgrade to 270G

Hey Kelly,
Awesome looking tank. I cant believe im just now finding out about the thread. Unfortunately i never fixed your 120 and ended up getting rid of it and havent gotten a new tank since. Hopefully my next one will look as good as yours.

all sunlight supply bluewave VII or III 250W ballasts driving 3 phoenix and two megachrome 14.5K DE bulbs.

Great, thanks! I still come back and check out your setup for reference. Freakin awesome setup! :)

The gear is plugged in to a wall socket and a couple of extension cords that run from the wall socket that inside the stand area up the right side cabinetry that the tank now covers. the inside of that area has all the ballasts and tunze transformers, aqua III, multicontroller etc.

I hoist the lights up and down with a bike hoist. the 4 adjustable steel cables are still attached but I don't use those anymore other than as the lowest setting when using the bike pulley.

the lumenmax III's do have a much wider spread without the obvious hot spot of the optix III's. I like them.

Cool. I'm thinking about getting 3 of the Lumen Max III's with Phoenix 14k bulbs over a 180 I'm starting. Can't wait! :)

good call if you're into DE's. three optix iiis' would work but they do really show shade areas between them.

Yeah, I definitely don't want shaded areas. That's what I was afraid of with the Reef Optix. I'm down to either the Lumen Max or Lumenarc Stealth for a DE setup.

So no shaded areas with the Lumen Max 3 then?

I can't make that promise since I have light sources that come from everywhere on my tank so I can't be sure. But I don't think you'd have a problem. I just looked up a lumenarc stealth, as I didn't know they released a DE version. What I DO know is that the mogul lumerarcs rock! I moved away from moguls but if I still had em I'd go lumenarc for sure.

kelhuffman, do you find the lumenmax III's brighter than the reef optix 3? I have a 250 Reef Optix 3 and I can't seem to find a bulb that is bright. I'm using a the bluewave HQI ballast. I thought it just was me and a guy came over today saying my light didn't seem that bright!

Just to make my question clear, I understand that the spread is much better with the lumenmax III's, I'm wondering if they look brighter.

No, they don't look any brighter. Brightness is only visible to me if the reflector is shiny. neither of these are shiny. But shinyness doesn't mean they are more reflective. the dimpled material apperantly is very efficient. what kelvin are you running?
