I lost my tanks when my town was evacuated for two weeks. I am just starting up again. My rock has dried for three months now and I cleaned it all up real good and got it back in the tank and filled with water. What's my best way to cycle this thing. I'm only putting a puffer and a tang in it so I don't want to use a damsel. Can I use the tang or the puffer to cycle it or is that to big of a risk? Also will there be any die off on my rock being it was dried and cleaned very well?

toss a piece of shrimp in to cycle it...do not add the tang or puffer...

K sounds good. Is it better to use shrimp or straight ammonia?

Also do I leave the shrimp in the whole time or for a couple days? I was told the bacteria needs a constant supply of ammonia.

Shrimp from the grocery store, uncooked. Leave it in there. It will decompose.

I've always done the straight ammonia with my SH tanks.

If you know someone that has a SW tank already established you could see if they have a dirty sponge or something like that and rinse it in your tank. Thats how I start the cycle process in most tanks and it works well for me.

I've had shrimp in there for two days and my ammonia is really high. Nitrite starting to show up. Looks like im on track. Thanks for all it help
