Starting to get into SPS.....

I am about to purchase my first frag of SPS and I was wondering if I will be overpaying or not.

I am going to purchase a 1" frag of superman monti for $60.

Does that sound reasonable?

that's about right, i've seen it for 80-100 bucks. Not sure that will be an easy first sps to keep though.

I think the superman are a bit on the hard to keep (color) side.

yeah, the superman needs really high light.

why dont you try an acro? if you're ever in OC i'll give you a frag of my bluetipped stag(although it's not blue tipped right now, maybe i should call it a brown tipped and bodied stag) to try out.

Thanks John! I will probably go with the acro to see how things pan out. I'm in the process of purchasing a 3 gal tru vu system w/ 70w MH. That should be enough lighting right?

3gal? i'm thinking you mean 30gal. not sure how deep it is but i'd probably go w/a 150W.

but if it's a 3gal then 70W is more than enough.

Right now I have 24g nano w/ 144w PC.

this one is at work but now has a lot of coralline that i've been too lazy to scrape off. There's a yellow striped goby and a couple sexy shrimp and some hermits and snails. basically it just takes care of itself. haha.

i say get a free frag from a fellow reefer before you spend money on SPS to make sure you and your tank are doing ok first.. SPS are a PITA to keep alive at first.

Just curious. I noticed your thread over at the sells forum for an inch of superman monti for $80. I thought you're getting into sps and purchasing a superman monti? How come you're selling a piece of superman monti for $80 at the sells forum and then posting here asking if $60 is a good price to buy it at?

That's a good idea to sell it if your tank cannot handle sps. I guess what made me notice the two threads were the price difference. If you just bought a frag for $60 why are you selling it right away for $85. Be different if you grew it out a little and then sold it but it seems like you're posting these two threads on the same day. Unless of course you didn't purchase the original frag for $60. =)

Id start off with a monticap....They are super easy to keep...

Heck if you want to make the drive to my place in Anaheim Ill hook you up with a frag of green monticap for free....
