Steinhart Clam Donation

corals b 4 bills

New member
I thought about selling my Gigas clam awhile ago in my club forum and had no takers because he was so big that I decided to keep him (I didn't really want to sell him but I bought twenty more corals and the wife caught me, so the clam has to go), then last night someone PM'd me and said that I should donate him to the new 100,000 gallon reef exibit in San Francisco, what do you think? Would this be a good move? will he actually live 50 years in this tank? My current tank is a 155 but I'm upgrading to a 180-215 in 6 months or so, Iv'e had him for 18 months when he was about 4" now he's approx. 11" in shell and he grows between 1/2 to 3/4" a month just want your opinion here are some time lapsed photo's of his growth (ooo baby pictures :D) I would appreciate your opinion thank's, Mark

Thats a great idea. Every time you go to the aquarium you can tell every one that thats your clam. Sooner or later your tanks going to crash god forbid but thats what usually happens and if that does happen most likely the clam will die. So its up to you but the aquarium idea is a good one . GOOD LUCK!

Yea your right it's not if...it's when the inevitable happens, I'll make some calls and see how the process works, you know information on diving visitation rights, the gold plaque with our pictures together mounted just beneath the tank and a memo from the head of the department thanking me for bestowing such a magnificent creature to an unworthy establishment, ..... or maybe I'll just hand him off to them :D.

Hey I have a friend from my reef club going to Steinhart tomorrow to be interviewed for a volunteer position and he said he would ask them about my donation, I'll let you know what happens you never know if or when you visit this public aquarium you can say "Hey!...I know this clam!"

Mark - I have been setting donations to the steinhart for BAR. If you want I can set up a time for you to drop it off. But I think you should just get a bigger tank! Anyways, if Brian helped you out already thats cool, they give out tax dontations reciepts too. I know they have been growing out about 5 smaller gigas already. You should join my sf tank tour and see some of our tanks. good luck.

Thank's Arnold, Hey I'm going to the SF. tank tour tomorrow! so I will be able to see all the goods. I told my wife that I am going to keep him and she said that I'll have to make a "Clam Cove" for him in the new tank we get .....Oh yea! 180 or 215 in wall......With a giant gigas clam as my main attraction.
