Mike,

I remember one time I added about 1/2 pound of kalk to my kalk reactor and did not wait until it all settled before turning my top-off on. My tank was completely white in a matter of minutes and my P.H. was over 8.8. Luckily the only thing I lost was a fat clown fish.

Hey Mike...sorry to hear about that...when it rains it pours eh? Gabriel is here spending the night. Finally at 1am were are going to sleep...it's been fun talking with him and we have spent some time talking about you rrecent misfortunes. With you rdedication I know you will rebound nicely. :D

OK, so we had a few beers and that would explain my mispellings right?

Yep, it just goes to show you, it's better to be lucky than good.

Gary - No worries, I'm all full of cheer now. The future's looking bright!

John (thedude) - When my office tank is up and running (I can't believe it's only 2 months away :bounce1: :bounce2:  :bounce2: :bounce1: ) I'm planning on transferring my mimic tang into it. Any ideas on what I could replace it with in my current 30g? I love the yellow color, but I don't want to get a jumper, if you know what I mean. I actually think I could get 2 more fish, which would give me a total of 5. I'm sure the Deltec can handle the bioload.

Clint (fishypets) - Was my number accurate regarding the number of acros we have left?

drummereef - Thanks!

jnarowe - Yeah, it was a stupid mistake. I'm acutely aware of the detrimental effects of overdosing with kalk, but I was in a "WT*" mood and just let it happen. Stupid, careless, foolish -- it'll never happen again. 1 a.m. hu? Gabriel's usually just getting started by then ;) .

I am going to have beer turds for a week!

And BTW, I sent a couple frags for you back with Gabriel to help get you re-started...

Mike,

Hmmm yellow small fish huh... I'll think about it. I know you wanted a pygmy angel for a long time but they really make your sps keep their polyps in at night. Perhaps its time for that swissguard basslet pair?

Was that a yellow tang you had in your tank???
A tang in a 30 gal!! I would have thouhgt you learned something with that disaster of a reef tank you went through. Oh well some people never lear. I felt terrible for you until that.

If you had been reading this thread all along, you would have a clue that THAT statement was not called for.

Ahaaaa ... he's starting a large tank in two months .... needs to REPLACE the tang in the thirty ...

.... call the tang police on the real offenders, the dude is a student of the reef and ... I am guessing here, but I am pretty sure he doesn't need you to feel sorry for him.

jnarowe - Thank you so much! Please send me a pm and let me know how I can repay you. Your generosity, as well as your interest and contributions to this thread, are most appreciated. I hope you don't mind if I allow the frags to shack up in Gabriel's tank for 4 weeks (if it's OK with GK), as I want my reef fallow of all acros for the full 10 week period.

John - I agree, no angel for my tank. I'm definitely open to suggestions. That goes to everyone following this thread, as well.

staticx - I'll address your comments in turn. First, no, it is not a yellow tang. It is a juvenile mimic tang. The shape of this fish is quite different from the shape of yellow tangs. They're actually not even in the same genus. The mimic tang is in the genus Acanthurus, while the yellow tang is of the genus Zebrasoma. I'm going through the effort of documenting this for you since, as you have self-proclaimed in your signature line, you are quite new to reefing. And that's okay, we all were at one time or another. I, myself, still feel new to the hobby. Regarding my ability to learn from disasters, you can read quite clearly in this thread the research that went into remedying the problem that came about in my reef. You obviously have extensive knowledge regarding the detrimental effects of yellow tangs in 30g tanks - please do me the favor of outlining this here, so that others can benefit from your experience. Lastly, as Bax has mentioned, I'm not looking for pity, only to document the occurences of my reef so that I can reflect on past events and, hopefully, help others to learn in the process.

Bax - Thanks for watching my back! ;)

Mike...no payment neccessary of course. If and when I have a TTC in the future, I hope people will help me out. What goes around, comes around right?!

And Gabriel said he would mount them and keep them until he could get over to your place. He'll dip them as well so they should be well recovered by the time you are ready for them. GL!

I have no problem holding on to them for you. A couple of them I am a little worried about but some of the others look great. Let me know when you are ready.

Dudester, you're running an open top tank at home, right? (I'm being lazy in flipping through all of the pages of this thread for a pic) Hence your "no jumpers" request. Well, I like this fish so much that even though it can jump, I'll put it out there anyway. A Midas Blenny will give your tank a great shot of yellow, and they change their body coloring a bit depending on mood, so will not always be the same. I love their swimming motion, and think that their faces are great.

Again though, they can jump, so maybe not an option for the home tank. Perhaps the jumbo office tank... :)

Midas Blennys are definitely jumpers.

Mine has survived, a bail out in QT, where it spent several minutes in a pile of salt creep before I found it.

Two in and outs in my overflow in the main tank

and an 8 month stay in the overflow in the main tank.

I now cover my overflows.

Great fish though!

Hey staticx, you wrote this just after you posted your genius statement here:

"Why cant people just agree to disagree. some say no qt and then people chime in and call them ignorant. People like that need to get off there high horse and let other people have there own opinions, that is what this board is for. If you dont agree with what siomeone says, fine . But no need to call them ignorant. This board is a place to discuss opinions and shared experiences. If you dont agree then fine state why you do not agree but no need to call names."

So why don't you go ahead and climb off the horse and join us all on the ground?

Dudester & Fishypets,

This has been a most educational thread. I'm sorry for your losses but it looks like many have learned from it. I know I have.

This thread reminds me of a quote.

"It's not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena. Whose face is marred with dust and sweat and blood. Who strives valiantly. Who errs and comes short again and again. Who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause. Who in the end, at best know the triumph of high achievement. And who if fails, at least fails while daring greatly. So his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt 1910(?)

Best of luck with your new corals.
