Hi all, I have a stingray that has parasites living on his underside. He is still eating but seems to not be able to bury himself completely since its probably painful. Does anyone know if I can treat this in any way. Freshwater bath or anything like that. I can isolate him. I did some research and I found ectoparasites is the cause but I cant find a cure. Thanks

I don't know if stingrays can handle the same medications and treatments that saltwater fishes can.

If it were a fish, the first course would be a freshwater dip/bath. If that didn't get them off, then treatment with a medication containing an organophosphate would be the next step.

But, I don't know for sure if the stingray can handle either or both of these treatments. Sorry. :(

Thanks. I figured since the Ray would die anyway if I didnt take any action I decided to give the freshwater bath for 5 mins last night. I notiched a bunch of the prasites detached. I put the ray back in the tank and he swam to the corner. I will just now have to see the long term affect. Thanks

I did a freshwater dip the other day and today(2 days later) the ray is doing well. Starting to eat again. I actually saw the parasites floating in the freshwater. It was dipped in for 5 mins. I just wanted to let everyone know.

is there anyway to post pictures of these parasites? I'm just curious to know what they looked like. I know that a large aquarium has/had a problem with leeches in the past. Wondering if these were leeches or another problem? How big are these parasites? If you can't get a picture can you describe them (color, size, texture, etc)?

This is purely for my own education. I'm just curious. Thanks
Eric

They actually looked like pods but are transparent and much smaller. Some looked like they were under the skin but most looked attached on the surface. I looked today and all are now gone. I did some research on the web and found that they use a barb like tooth to attach to the host. These parasites can cause problems with the fish respatory system. In addition the open wounds can cause more infections which in turn will kill the fish. I hope this helps
